MPs oppose potential EBRD financing for K2/R4 As of 20 April 1999
WISE-Paris, 22 April 1999
[Posted 22/04/1999]
13 UK Members of Parliament had signed the following
proposed resolution (Early Day Motion n°564):
NUCLEAR SAFETY IN THE UKRAINE AND THE EUROPEAN
BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT
"That this House notes the European Bank and Development's
plans to fund completion of two partially constructed Soviet-designed
reactors in the Ukraine, reactor No. 2 at Khmelnitsky and reactor No.
4 at Rovno, known collectively as K2/R4; is concerned that with the
forthcoming 13th anniversary of the notorious Chernobyl disaster the
Bank accepts that the completed reactors would not meet western European
nuclear safety standards; is concerned that the proposal does not meet
the Bank's own investment criteria; notes that the project should be
the least cost solution; further notes that no environmental impact
assessment has been carried out under Ukrainian law; and calls on the
Government to support the German Bundestag in withholding support for
the proposal pending a new investigation into non-nuclear options in
the Ukraine."
